Job Description
Pittsburg State University is accepting applications for an Economic Data Technician in the Kelce College of Business that is responsible for supporting the missions of the Business and Economic Research Center (BERC), by retrieving data from official sources, compiling and managing electronic databases for analysis, conducting analyses to maintain the integrity and security of the data, generating descriptive visualization of the data, assisting BERC personnel in preparing reports and publications, and maintaining and updating the BERC website and data repository.
Duties and Responsibilities
Retrieves and Organizes Data for Economic Analysis (Essential) - 40%
- Retrieves economic and business data from various websites and other sources maintained by federal, state, and corporate entities, including but not limited to, the following:
- Builds large scale electronic databases to support the applied regional economic analysis work of the Business and Economic Research Center and the Micropolitan Studies initiatives of the Economic Development and Community Engagement Division
- Organizes and maintains the currency of relational databases for machine learning and statistical analysis using the latest hardware and software available to the BERC
Manages and Analyzes Data - 30% - Generates descriptive statistics and data visualizations as needed for various BERC publications, including the quarterly Pittsburg Micropolitan Area Economic Report and the annual Pittsburg Micropolitan Area Economic Profile
- Assists the BERC Director in the collection of data to construct local cost-of-living and price indexes
- Assists in the collection and organization of data necessary to perform economic impact studies and other customized work for clients of the BERC
Editorial and Publication Responsibilities - 25% - Provides editorial support for articles, reports, tables, charts, and graphs for the quarterly Pittsburg Micropolitan Area Economic Report and the annual Pittsburg Micropolitan Area Economic Profile
- Assists the BERC Director in managing the physical publication and distribution of the Pittsburg Micropolitan Area Economic Report and the Pittsburg Micropolitan Area Economic Profile
- On a regular basis, publishes updated local, regional, and state data series on the public-facing BERC website
- Generates data visualization graphics for use in customized hardcopy and online reports and publications of the BERC
Other Duties as Assigned - 5% - Assists BERC personnel in the production and delivery of community outreach events and projects
- Other office duties as assigned
Education and ExperienceRequired Education and Experience - Time of Hire - Bachelor's degree in either information technology, data science, statistics, quantitative analysis, economics, business, or closely related field
Candidates must hold a bachelor's degree in information technology, data science, statistics, quantitative analysis, economics, business discipline or related field. This degree requirement ensures candidates possess the advanced theoretical knowledge, highly specialized methodologies, and critical problem-solving skills fundamental to this work. These competencies are typically developed and rigorously validated only through the comprehensive curriculum and intensive experiential experience inherent in a formal degree program.
Preferred Education and Experience - Documented knowledge of relational databases, Excel, and statistical analysis software packages
- Appropriate professional certifications in database management, SQL, website design, professional writing, or other relevant skills
- 1 Year or more experience working in a professional setting

Salary Range: $50,000 annually
